BATTLE CRY FOR LIFE

Pope John Paul II had a profound and consistent message regarding the sanctity of life, which he emphasized throughout his papacy.

  1. Sanctity of Life: He strongly affirmed the belief that all human life is sacred from conception to natural death. His encyclicals and speeches often highlighted the importance of protecting life at all stages.
  2. Opposition to Abortion: Pope John Paul II was a vocal opponent of abortion, which he described as a grave moral evil. He called for a culture of life that respects and protects the unborn.
  3. Euthanasia and Assisted Suicide: He condemned euthanasia and assisted suicide, emphasizing that these practices undermine the dignity of human life. He encouraged compassion and care for the sick and elderly rather than ending their lives.
  4. Theology of the Body: In his teachings known as the “Theology of the Body,” he addressed the meaning of human sexuality and relationships, emphasizing the importance of love, respect, and the procreative aspect of marriage.
  5. Promotion of Family Life: Pope John Paul II believed that the family is the “sanctuary of life.” He advocated for strong family values and the importance of fostering an environment where life is cherished and nurtured.
  6. Human Rights: He linked the respect for life with broader human rights issues, advocating for justice, peace, and the protection of the marginalized and vulnerable in society.
  7. Culture of Life: He often called for a shift from a “culture of death,” characterized by violence, abortion, and euthanasia, to a “culture of life” that values and promotes the dignity of every human being.

Pope John Paul II’s teachings on life have had a lasting impact on the Catholic Church’s stance on bioethical issues and continue to inspire individuals and communities to advocate for the protection of life in various contexts.

Pope John Paul II and the Youth

Pope John Paul II made several significant contributions to the youth, one of the most notable being the establishment of World Youth Day. Here are some key aspects of his contributions:

  1. World Youth Day: Initiated in 1985, this global event brought together young people from around the world to celebrate their faith. It provided a platform for youth to engage in spiritual renewal, fellowship, and discussions about contemporary issues.
  2. Message of Hope and Empowerment: John Paul II often spoke directly to the youth, encouraging them to embrace their faith and use their gifts to contribute positively to society. He emphasized the importance of hope, love, and the pursuit of truth.
  3. Emphasis on the Role of Youth in the Church: He believed that young people are vital to the Church’s mission and encouraged them to take an active role in parish life and the broader community. He often called on youth to be agents of change and to stand up for justice and peace.
  4. Theology of the Body: His teachings on human sexuality, love, and relationships, compiled in the “Theology of the Body,” addressed the importance of understanding one’s dignity and the meaning of love, which resonated deeply with young people.
  5. Personal Relationship with Youth: John Paul II had a unique ability to connect with young people. His warmth, openness, and authenticity made him a beloved figure among the youth, inspiring many to deepen their faith and commitment to the Church.
  6. Encouragement of Cultural Engagement: He encouraged young people to engage with culture, art, and education, promoting the idea that they could bring their faith into all aspects of life.

Through these contributions, Pope John Paul II left a lasting legacy that continues to inspire and guide the youth of the Church today. His emphasis on love, hope, and active participation remains relevant for young people facing contemporary challenges.

Commitment to serve our Youth

Many years ago, in the early ’90s, a youth leader once said, “I am inspired by Kuya John because he knows the meaning of his life — a commitment to serve the youth and care for our environment.”

That commitment, formed in my youth, was born from the call of Jesus and inspired by Pope John Paul II — a mission to share God with the world, both in word and in action.

I started as a Youth Leader in the community in 1980 and became active in my environmental advocacy. Unfortunately My spirituality was a bit cold.

Then I was transformed with the Miracle of the Holy Eucharist that allowed me to serve God by focusing this time to evangelize our youth making God my priority.

Following the will of God

My Life with the Youth

In the 1990s, I entered a new dimension of serving the youth through a Non-Government Organization. YMCA, Rotary, PAJAFA It all began when I joined our parish’s Charismatic Group at the National Shrine of the Sacred Heart.

Eventually, I was given the opportunity to lead as the head of the Parish Pastoral Council Youth Ministry.

The Parish Youth Council was made up of leaders from various organizations, working together to implement programs not just for the Church, but also for the surrounding community. It became a platform where young people could grow in faith, character, and leadership.

Our youth ministry served as a vital space for young individuals to develop strong spiritual and moral foundations—values that are deeply needed in today’s world. Through our collective efforts, we were not only building the Church, but also shaping a generation of inspired and empowered youth..

World Youth Day Delegation from the National Shrine of the Sacred Heart of Jesus

As soon as we saw the Pope at the University of Santo Tomas, we felt an overwhelming sense of awe. There was a strong, unexplainable aura surrounding His Holiness—as if the Holy Spirit had suddenly descended upon us. The atmosphere shifted; hearts were stirred, and tears welled up in many eyes. It was a moment of grace that words could barely capture.

We were part of the Music Ministry, entrusted with performing at various locations during the thematic events of the papal visit. One of the most unforgettable moments was when we played at the historic Rizal Memorial Stadium. To share our music in service of such a sacred event, surrounded by thousands of faithful, was both humbling and spiritually uplifting. It wasn’t just a performance—it was worship.

Went Home to the Philippines 2019 singing with the choir.

On my very first night at the church, I was fortunate enough to join the choir during the Mass. It felt like a divine appointment—the songs they sang were some of my personal favorites, each one stirring something deep within me. I felt truly blessed to be part of that moment, surrounded by voices lifted in praise and hearts united in worship. It was as if God was gently affirming that I was in the right place, at the right time.

Went Home in the Philippines in 2023 and sang beautifully.

We were once a church choir at the National Shrine of the Sacred Heart, and after nearly 20 years, we reunited — friends from across the globe. During our get-together, we decided to sing again. Amazingly, as we gathered around the dinner table, we found ourselves seated perfectly, as if we had been arranged in a choir setting.

It was not planned. God allowed it to happen

Bringing our Community Youth to our Church

“Dear young people, you know that Christianity is not an opinion nor does it consist of empty words. Christianity is Christ! It is a Person, a Living Person! To meet Jesus, to love him and make him loved:  this is the Christian vocation. Mary was given to you to help you enter into a more authentic and more personal relationship with Jesus. Through her example, Mary teaches you to gaze on him with love, for He has loved us first. Through her intercession, she forms in you a disciple’s heart able to listen to her Son, who reveals the face of his Father and the true dignity of the human person.” Pope John ll

I am proud to say that in the late 1990s, there was a time in our community when our youth truly embodied the essence of Filipino idealism—Makadiyos, Makatao, Makabayan, at Makakalikasan. It was inspiring to witness young people live out these values not just in words, but in action.

Many of them were active members of organizations like the

Rotaract and YMCA, showing leadership, compassion, and dedication to service. Some have grown to become present-day leaders in our community, continuing the mission they started in their youth.

I remember one of our youth, Harvey Drilon, who played the role of Jesus during one of our Lenten celebrations at the National Shrine of the Sacred Heart in Makati City. His dedication and passion stood out. He was later given the opportunity to join the Asian Fifteen Program in Hokkaido, Japan—an initiative under PAJAFA 21. It was a proud moment for all of us.

I’ve always encouraged our youth to take an active role in community building—to live a life of purpose and service. Build a legacy that your future children will be proud of. That is the call. That is the dream.

Building our Church with the Youth with Father Flavie Villanueva

A friendship Forever

Planting the Vision

In the late 1990s, we gathered the youth in our community for a simple but powerful activity—a group dynamics session centered around one question: “What kind of Church do we want to build?”

They were young, full of passion, and unafraid to dream. Their answers were not about walls or structures, but about spirit and mission. They envisioned a Church that reaches out, transforms lives, and brings people into a deeper relationship with our Lord. A Church that equips its people to evangelize and share God’s love with everyone.

Fast forward to today—this is the Church we have been striving to build. A living Church. A loving Church.

I am humbled just to have been there, to witness the fire in their hearts and to feel their warmth, appreciation, and sincere smiles. Those moments remind me why this mission matters.

Thank you, Father Flavie Villanueva, for your constant support, guidance, and faith in what the youth can do.

Before leaving the Center he told me that he would be given an award at the Club Filipino and invited me to join him.

I cannot believe that how fortunate for me to attend a grand reunion of my Alma Mater Letran.

Father Flavie on his mission to serve the Homeless

A Blessing in the Storm

I will always be deeply grateful to my friend, Rev. Fr. Flavie Villanueva, for his compassion during one of the hardest moments of my life—at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic.

I reached out to Fr. Flavie and asked if he could bless my mother, even just through Zoom. With great kindness, he responded that he was currently on a retreat outside of Manila—but he didn’t stop there. He said he would find a way.

True to his word, he asked another priest to visit and bless my mother in person. Because of that, my mother received the Last Rites—a sacred gift in her final moments. She was prayed over, anointed, and sent home to the Lord in peace. She even got stronger that week.

That moment brought comfort to our family. It was a light in a time of darkness. And it reminded me of the kind of Church we strive to build—one that reaches out, one that responds with love, even in the most difficult times.

Thank you, Fr. Flavie. Your compassion will never be forgotten. Amen.

They are connected to speak the Truth

MANILA, Philippines — Former Iloilo City Mayor Jed Mabilog said on Thursday, September 19, that he did not return to the Philippines in 2017 due to a warning from a police general not to come home.

After Mabilog returned to the country on September 10, he attended the sixth public hearing of the House’s quadcom on Thursday in hopes that he would be given due process.

Here’s what happened based on Mabilog’s sworn statement.

The president’s drug list. On Aug. 7, 2016, former President Rodrigo Duterte accused Mabilog on live television of being a “major drug protector” and included him in his list of public officials allegedly involved in the country’s illegal drug trade, despite the absence of any drug-related charges against him.

Since then, Duterte would occasionally mention Mabilog during broadcasted events or interviews related to the former president’s war on drugs, even saying once in Filipino to “get rid” of him.

Law enforcement agencies, however, confirmed that Mabilog was not included in the original list submitted to the Philippine National Police and the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency.

When the former mayor was informed of the list, a police chief requested that he surrender his firearms and have all his security personnel removed from his detail as mayor.

Mabilog asked him why he was included in the list without validation and the police chief only answered, “Nanggaling sa taas ang lista (The list came from higher-ups),” referring to Duterte.

The Catholic charismatic movement is one of the many fruit of the Second Vatican Council, which, like a new Pentecost, led to an extraordinary flourishing in the Church’s life of groups and movements particularly sensitive to the action of the Spirit. How can we not give thanks for the precious spiritual fruits that the Renewal has produced in the life of the Church and in the lives of so many people? How many lay faithful – men. women, young people, adults and the elderly – have been able to experience in their own lives the amazing power of the Spirit and his gifts! How many people have rediscovered the faith, the joy of Prayer, the power and beauty of the Word of God, translating all this into generous service in the Church’s mission! How many lives have been profoundly changed! For all this today, together with you, I wish to praise and thank the Holy Spirit.”

Our Holy Father, Pope John Paul II says, “

Thanks to the charismatic movement, many Christians, men and women, youths and adults, have rediscovered Pentecost as a living and present reality in their daily life… I desire that the spirituality of Pentecost be spread in the Church, as a renewed thrust of prayer, holiness, communion and proclamation ...I sincerely desire that this initiative lead many to rediscover the gifts of the Spirit, which have their source in Pentecost. Among us, with raised hands, is praying the Virgin, Mother of Christ and of the Church. Together with her, let us implore and receive the gift of the Holy Spirit, light of truth, strength of authentic peace ” (VATICAN CITY, MAY 30, 2004 (Zenit.org)

A Pilgrimage in Denver

In 2018, I had the opportunity to travel to Denver, Colorado for a company event. But what began as a professional trip soon turned into something deeply personal—a pilgrimage.

I found myself standing in the same Church that Pope John Paul II visited during World Youth Day in 1993. That moment marked the 25th anniversary of his historic visit, and I couldn’t help but feel the weight of its spiritual significance. I was walking the same path where countless youth from around the world gathered to celebrate faith, unity, and the call to holiness.

It was also August 15, the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. A day where the Church commemorates the belief that Mary was taken body and soul into heaven. This doctrine is more than tradition—it is a reminder of Mary’s purity, her closeness to God, and her role as Mother to all Christians.

As I sat in the pews, the air was filled with reverence. I prayed. I reflected. And I realized that this wasn’t just a trip—it was a divine appointment. God had brought me here not just for work, but for worship.

That day renewed my spirit. It reminded me of the beauty of our faith, and how, even in unexpected places, God meets us, calls us, and renews us.

A Pilgrimage Through Time: Encountering Pope John Paul II’s Legacy

In 2024, we visited Los Angeles to mark a special anniversary. As we explored, we came upon a remarkable display—encased in glass were sacred relics from Pope John Paul II’s visit to this very place years ago. Among them, carefully preserved, was an item he had worn during his visit—a powerful reminder of his presence and spiritual influence.

Standing before these relics, I couldn’t help but feel a profound connection, not just to history, but to the living faith that Pope John Paul II inspired in millions. The mitre, the chalices, the sacred vessels—they were not just artifacts; they were symbols of a faith that transcends time and place.

This visit was more than a historical moment; it became a pilgrimage of the heart. It reminded me how God moves through the leaders He appoints, how faith is passed down through generations, and how one man’s mission to spread God’s love continues to inspire.

It was a humbling experience—one that reinforced the beauty of our universal Church, where faith is alive, history speaks, and the spirit of service, evangelization, and devotion remains as strong as ever.

Went to the Philippines 2023 while in Bataan I googled search for the nearest church it leads me to his shrine.

Prayers

The phrase “Pope has a strong aura of holiness” captures the profound reverence and respect that many people feel toward the Pope, especially figures like Pope John Paul II. Here are some aspects that contribute to this perception:

  1. Spiritual Authority: As the leader of the Catholic Church, the Pope embodies spiritual authority and serves as a moral compass for millions of Catholics around the world. His teachings and actions often reflect deep faith and commitment to God.
  2. Example of Virtue: Many popes, including John Paul II, have lived lives marked by virtue, humility, and dedication to service. Their personal examples inspire others to pursue holiness in their own lives.
  3. Connection to Tradition: The Pope represents a long line of spiritual leaders who have guided the Church through centuries of history. This connection to tradition lends a sense of continuity and sacredness to his role.
  4. Charismatic Presence: Popes often possess a charismatic presence that draws people in. Their ability to connect with individuals, regardless of background, can create an atmosphere of holiness and reverence.
  5. Commitment to Prayer and Sacraments: The Pope’s life is centered around prayer, the Sacraments, and the teachings of Christ. This dedication reinforces the perception of holiness and inspires others to deepen their own spiritual practices.
  6. Advocacy for Peace and Justice: The Pope often stands as a voice for the marginalized and oppressed, advocating for peace, justice, and human dignity. This commitment to social issues reflects the Church’s mission and enhances the aura of holiness.
  7. Miracles and Canonizations: Throughout history, popes have been associated with miracles and the canonization of saints, further enhancing the perception of their holiness.

In summary, the Pope’s strong aura of holiness is a combination of spiritual authority, personal virtue, connection to tradition, and a commitment to living out the teachings of Christ. This presence inspires many to seek a deeper relationship with God and to strive for holiness in their own lives.
